Are we talking immediate sequels? My favorites:

Son of Frankenstein (1939) - If I may be so bold, the mad scientist descendent in Ghost of Frankenstein seems more to me like dried paint left on a wall from Colin Clive's role. His brother's both complex and lovable. On the B-side, Bela Lugosi as Ygor. Definite plus.

King Kong vs Godzilla (1962) - If you're a CGI whore you might not be able to appreciate the suitimation. If you're a businessman you likely won't appreciate the satirical stabs at you. A) Kong gets drunk, B) Bond girl Mie Hama gets the Fay Wray treatment, and C) The poor diet building! All elements included in history's greatest films.

Godzilla vs Destoroyah (1995) - The Heisei Godzilla series' climactic finish. Godzilla's deep in meltdown mode and this time his nemesis is Destoroyah, a colony organism that was mutated in 1954 on the date of the original gojisaur's death. Godzilla's meltdown spirals toward a blast likely to destroy all life on earth, enflamed by the opposition of Destoroyah. Also, a key variable in the form of a rookie godzillasaur who's grown a bit since the last two movies.

Bael, although Swiss, is completely and absolutely right there. I myself would have thrown in Blade II which dwarfed the horrendous Blade aswell.

I think Science Fiction Rules the sequels racket!

double lol antagonist ;). first for the swiss reference (there's no "altough", swiss rock), and second because for a moment i almost typed Blade II (but discarded that thought because Blade II was indeed better than the first part, but nonetheless quite weak). it's frightening how an arrogant brit could think in the same lines as me *g*.

thinking a little more some movies from other genres come to my mind:

Batman Begins
Spiderman II
X2 (X-Men II)
Evil Dead II
Toy Story II

Rocky IV - It counts.

What a film. The most heroic boxer on the history of the planet grinds meat with a physically perfect specimen of humanity. And defuses the cold war in doing so.

Bourne Ultimatum and Supremacy

I didnt think the first could be topped, but both sequels exceeded my expectations

also, Dumb & Dumberer... oh wait, that one is for the other list :)

This of course is subject to opinion and while the title of the thread suggests just one sequel as being the BEST since the OP himself posted numerous titles I too should list numerous titles.

Star Wars, but that's a given.
Indiana Jones, the last Crusade, but that's only because the second one really kinda sorta sucked. That and I have bad memories of people making me say "Doctah Jones Doctah Jones" because apparently I really looked like that little asian kid in Temple of Doom when I wore my green hat. But I digress.
I kinda liked the Back to the Future sequels too.
Oh and um I really liked the third Harry Potter movie. I think it's the strongest of the Harry Potter movies to tell the truth.
Oh and I might as well say it, the second Terminator movie. It's the first one I actually watched and holds the best memories (nightmares) for me.

But out of all of them the one sequel I really think is far and away better than the original I'd have to say Star Wars. Episode four was just kinda lame for me to tell the truth. (And Episodes 1,2, and 3 have been suppressed from my memory so they don't count anyway)

A big hells yes for Evil Dead 2 and Empire Strikes Back.

How about Aliens?

Others:

- Dawn of the Dead (the original Romero one, though the remake isn't half-bad)
- Drunken Master 2 (aka, The Legend of Drunken Master)
- and, finally, Godfather 2, obviously!

ah yes, Aliens. That series took a weird curve for me:

Alien: 8 / 10
Aliens: 10 / 10
Alien3: 3 / 10
Alien Resurrection: -3 / 10

I own Alien Resurrection, but haven't worked up the courage to watch it yet. The director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, is one of my favorites, but the movie is such an infamous failure that I'm afraid it'll ruin my appreciation of the man.

I guess there are a bunch of behind-the-scenes and making-of documentaries on the disc explaining why the movie turned out so poorly (Jeunet doesn't speak English, for one) which would be pretty interesting to see, though.

(EDIT: and, checking IMDB, I see Joss Whedon of Firefly / Serenity fame wrote the script! Amazing that the film could've turned out so poorly.)

Seeing as Alien3 was a creative nightmare. Jeunet has no excuse. He stands by his work unlike Fincher who coudln't get an inch of leeway! Although I enjoyed Alien3 for what it is and 'how it turned out'.

Maybe Alien & Aliens should be considered candidates for Great Duologies, T1 and T2 aswell!!!

sequels are only good if they expand, explain and improve the original storyline. but once its all wrapped up perfectly, as was the case with Aliens and T2, any new film in the series will blow chunks.

exception are films whose storylines never really conclude, as the focus is more on the character. take James Bond or Indiana Jones as examples.

Here's another sequel I enjoyed:

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Pretty much a perfect send-off for the original series characters.

5. Spiderman 2 - Way better than the first. I liked Spiderman 1, but loved the second one.

4. Godfather 2 - I know that the rest of the planet says that this one is the superior film, but I myself like the first one better. Now don't get me wrong, G-2 is practically a perfect movie, however IMO, G-1 is just a bit more perfect. That being said, if only all sequels could match the quality ratio that this one did with its predecessor, then I bet that there wouldn't be any more wars in the world.
Like,
ever.

3. The Empire Strikes Back - I would say that this one was the best of the first trilogy, but I don't want overstate the obvious.
I will say though that I always knew that Darth Vee-to-the-Ay-to-the-Dee-er was Luke's biological patriarch. What I didn't realize was that Leia was Luke's sister.
Hah-hah....
Skywalker made out with own sister (:points-&-laffs:) .....
now yer kids are gonna be born with an extra ear, a distorted version of down's syndrome & a proficiant talent for playing the banjo. Hah-hah....!

2. Terminator 2 - Ahnold's bock....and better than ever.
Mann....
I wish I was made outta liquid metal......

1. Aliens - Yo, is it my imagination, or should we just put James Cameron in charge of all science fiction sequels?
